A CELEBRITY dinner attended by rugby union superstar Gareth Edwards has boosted the funds of two charities.

The former Wales and British Lions scrum-half entertained an audience at the Cedar Court Hotel, Ainley Top, with a talk recounting his days on the rugby field.

Part of the proceeds of the evening, organised by Huddersfield Rotary Club, in February, were handed over to Paul Gowland, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance fundraiser.

The cheque for £1,800 was presented during one of the club's meetings at the George Hotel in Huddersfield. A cheque for a similar amount has already been given to the mental health charity Mind.

New president Brian Carter also officially received his chain of office from former president Paul Grant. Mr Carter has been a member of the club since the late 1960s.

Now retired, he ran a builder's merchants business and was president of the Builders Merchants' Guild in London.

Also during the meeting the Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Margaret Fearnley, was made an honorary member of Huddersfield Rotary Club. The honour is given to any new mayor whose ward falls within the old Huddersfield borough.

Clr Fearnley is a ward councillor for the Colne Valley.
