A disabled man has called on his neighbours to be more considerate and not park in a disabled space outside his home.

James Evans, 37, of Oxford Place, Lockwood, has a hip problem and struggles to walk any distance.

He says he is left in “agony” when he has to leave his car in a neighbourhood parking area further up the street.

Mr Evans, who suffers from slipped upper femoral epiphysis, claims the disabled space outside his bungalow is being abused by drivers without a blue badge.

Mr Evans moved into the Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing bungalow two years ago. It had been adapted for those with disabilities and had a yellow bay marked outside it for a previous tenant.

“It just seems really unfair,” said Mr Evans. “At times I’ve been left in agony due to having to park in the car park because I can hardly walk.

“People should be more considerate with these spaces and it feels like I’m being discriminated against.

“I’ve spoken to Kirklees Council about this but they said they had no powers to do anything, which I think is a shame because many people like me could be facing the same problem.

“I have spoken to the police and they have told me they will issue a penalty notice if they see a car parked there that shouldn’t be.”

It is understood a neighbour has said they believed Mr Evans was not entitled to use the spot because it was not created specifically for him.

Commenting on the issue, a council spokesman said: “Markings like those outside the property on Oxford Place are provided to advise that a resident needs to be able to park close to their home due to limited mobility.

“The markings are purely advisory but in the majority of cases are very effective and most residents politely respect them.”
