JAILED former MP David Chaytor is appealing against his 18-month sentence for fiddling his expenses.

The ex-Calderdale councillor was jailed last month after he was found guilty of fraudulently claiming more than £20,000 from the taxpayer.

The Judicial Communications Office revealed yesterday that Chaytor, 61, had lodged an appeal against the length of his sentence.

The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Judge, will hear the application on March 22.

The former Bury North MP falsely claimed more than £22,000 of taxpayers’ money for rent and computer work between 2005 and 2008.

Chaytor was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment at Southwark Crown Court on January 7.

He represented Todmorden on Calderdale Council in the 1980s and stood for Calder Valley in the 1987 and 1992 general elections, finishing second both times.
