PEOPLE of all faiths gathered at Huddersfield Town Hall to see the Diwali lights turned on.
Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman was among the guests at the ceremony on Friday night.
Diwali, the Hindu festival of light, runs until November 9.
After the switch on there was a procession to the Hindu Temple on Zetland Street where Mr Sheerman had a tilak anointed on his forehead. Prayers for world peace were said followed by a dance performance.
Guests enjoyed Indian vegetarian dishes and the event concluded with fireworks.
General secretary of the Hindu Society of Kirklees and Calderdale Kiran Bali said: “Diwali is a universal festival celebrating the light of love and glorifying the eternal light of God.
“We believe the light connects us with God and guides us during our arduous journey through life. Spiritually it dispels the darkness of ignorance and ushers in the light of knowledge.”
Ms Bali added that Diwali is also special for Sikhs who celebrate the release from prison of the sixth guru Hargobind Singh and 52 other princes from the Gwalior Fort in 1619.
