LOCKWOOD’S legendary ice cream company is to open a new shop on Leeds Road.

Dixon’s Milk Ices has turned out bucket loads of ice cream since it opened in Swan Lane, Lockwood, in 1961.

Now new premises, which will open later this month, will be catch the eye of thousands of motorists and tempt them to stop off and sample their tasty treats.

It has also secured seven new jobs and seen former Lockwood ice-cream maker Darren Earnshaw promoted to store manager.

He said: “Dixon’s is well known in Huddersfield and it celebrated 50 years last year.

“Since then we have been looking into opening a second premises in Huddersfield and the site in Leeds Road near the junction with St Andrew’s Road is a great location.

“We often have queues at the Lockwood shop.

But before new the shop can start trading builders are now hard at work to transform the former bookmakers into a modern ice-cream parlour with a traditional twist.

Mr Earnshaw added: “We have totally gutted the building and everything will be brand new.

“Although it looks small from the outside it will be over three floors, with a cellar for stock and upstairs for a small staff area.

“The main shop will have all the ice-creams, ice-lollies, slushes and coffees which we currently sell at Lockwood.

“We are also looking to bring in some Italian layered ice-creams in time for summer.”

He said the company plans to hold a grand launch after it opens its doors on March 26 and is also looking at setting up a new Facebook and Twitter accounts to allow customers to follow the latest store news.
