Cross Church Street is full of rats in the early hours of the morning — including this one, caught in a smartphone video being swept out of Dixy Chicken Huddersfield.

That's according to Dixy Chicken manager Omar Khan, who says rats can be seen darting about the busy town centre street as takeaways shut up shop in the early hours.

The video (click above to watch) shows a Dixy Chicken employee chasing the rat with a broom at around 4am on Saturday morning.

A man took a video of the drama and shared it on social media.

Mr Khan said staff were taking out rubbish to the street for the bin men to collect when the rodent ran inside.

"You can see the rats running outside in the street in the early hours of the morning," he said.

"My staff were closing the shop and putting the food waste and rubbish outside for the bin men, while they were doing that the rat came inside and a staff member got rid of it.

The council should be looking into the rat problem."

Mr Khan said Dixy Chicken, which was awarded a food hygiene rating of one when it was inspected in March, had had a pest control firm visit their premises and found the shop to be clear.

The Examiner contacted Kirklees Council but noone was available to comment.
