A TOP radio DJ who studied in Huddersfield has been speaking about his success in the university's alumni magazine.

Adil Ray, who began his broadcasting career on a pirate radio station in Huddersfield chatted to Encore about his latest show on the BBC's Asian Network.

Adil is now a nationally-acclaimed DJ who started his career with student nights.

He now hosts one of the most popular shows on the Asian Network, which goes out at 10pm every weeknight.

Adil, who in May 2000 was named among the nation's top 50 bachelors in Company Magazine, told Encore's Claire Beckwith he was enjoying his dream job.

He said: "The BBC is not commercial and therefore I get to play a lot of underground, breaking new music."

He joined the corporation in July 2002 and his is the only nightly national radio show for young Asians.

It is heard by half a million listeners. The British Asian population is about three million.

Marketing graduate Adil explained: "The BBC has realised there's a large untapped market there, which is why they are really pushing the network."

While at Huddersfield, he combined DJ slots for Birmingham radio station Choice FM and student nights in the town on Fridays and Saturdays.

He then joined the Drivetime and Saturday morning radio shows on Galaxy 105.

That move made him the first full-time British Asian presenter on commercial radio.

As for his future, Adil told Encore he hoped to remain in radio, or perhaps move into TV.

But he also wanted to give young people a helping hand.

"I'd like to establish some kind of agency to provide opportunities for the future radio presenters because I know how hard it is to get into radio. I'd like to help and give something back, particularly to those from an Asian background to get them more visible and mainstream."
