RESCUERS saved an exhausted dog that had fallen into a Huddersfield canal.

The Alsatian cross was spotted struggling in a lock at about 10.45pm on Thursday.

A Huddersfield fire crew was called to the Huddersfield Broad Canal at Red Doles Lane, off Leeds Road, and reached the dog by tying a ladder to the lock gates.

The team then fashioned a special harness out of a rope and canvas bag to snare the pet.

Then, noticing the dog was wearing a lead and collar, they made a thorough search of the canal, fearing the owner himself may have fallen in.

However, the owner turned up later and claimed the dog.
