A DOG is lucky to be alive after it was trapped in a canal lock for almost five hours.

The dog was first heard barking at around 8pm on Wednesday and it was discovered in the water on Huddersfield Broad Canal not far from McDonald’s at 12.45am yesterday by a security guard from a nearby building site.

A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “The dog had somehow managed to lodge its head under the bottom rung of a ladder leading up from the lock which meant it could stay afloat.

“It was absolutely exhausted and very cold when we rescued it.”

The dog, a mongrel, was taken to the RSPCA and is understood to have been reunited with its owner.
