Dogs having their big day!

DOGS from across Huddersfield will have their day in Greenhead Park next month.

DOGS from across Huddersfield will have their day in Greenhead Park next month.

Mongrels and breeds of all kinds can strut their stuff in the RSPCA fun dog show on September 1.

The annual event is usually combined with a horse show - but this year canines take centre stage.

Organiser Crystal Roberts said: "Because of the foot and mouth crisis, we thought it would be responsible to cancel the horse show, as many horses come from agricultural premises.

"Also, dogs should not come from areas infected by foot and mouth."

Several hundred pet owners are expected to enter their dogs in the show, which helps to raise money for the RSPCA in Huddersfield.

Different classes are organised for mongrels or pedigree breeds and include rescue, puppies, sporting, non-sporting, veteran, obedience and the dog the judge would most like to take home.

Dogs who do not normally take part in shows are particularly welcome. Owners should turn up with their dog and pay £1 on the day.

Rosettes, plaques and novelty gifts are provided for the winners.

Dogs can also take part in a regional heat for the national Burgess Super Dog of the Year competition.

There will be stalls selling pet goods, a tombola, games, face-painting and children's activities.

"We are trying to have more family events, to make the most of the day," said Mrs Roberts.

Anyone who would like to hold a stall should contact Janet Walker on 01484 329255.
