DOZENS of historic sites will open their doors to the public next weekend.

More than 100 sites across West Yorkshire are taking part in free Heritage Open Days between Thursday, September 11 and Sunday, September 14.

Colne Valley Museum in Golcar will be open from 2pm to 5pm next Saturday and Sunday.

The museum will serve tea and scones in its 1920s-style tearoom. There will also be demonstrations of spinning, weaving and clog-making.

All Saints’ Church in Elland is also taking part in the Heritage Open Days. The Grade II listed building will be open next Sunday between 1pm and 5pm.

Angela Byram, who is helping organise the event, said: “All Saints’ is one of the finest churches built in the early 20th century. As part of the opening there will be an exhibition of items connected to the baptism and the day will be completed with a service of thanksgiving at 4.30pm.”

The Friends Meeting House in High Flatts, near Birdsedge, is also opening its doors. The Quaker House, which dates back to 1652, will be open from 10am to 4.30pm next Thursday, Friday and Saturday and from midday to 4.30pm next Sunday.

Pre-booking is not required at any of the three places.

Heritage Open Days is organised by English Heritage.

MANY historic sites in and around Huddersfield will be open next weekend. None of the following locations require pre-booking.

Lindley Clock Tower will be open from 9am to 5pm next Saturday and Sunday.

St Thomas’s Church on Manchester Road in Huddersfield opens from 2pm to 6pm next Thursday and Friday. The church will also be open from 10.30am to 6pm next Saturday and from midday to 6pm next Sunday.

St John the Evangelist Church in Upper Denby will be open next Friday from 9am to 3pm and from 9am to 4pm next Saturday.

Lydgate Unitarian Chapel in Holmfirth opens from 10.30am to 4pm next Saturday and Sunday.

Meltham Town Hall opens 1pm to 4.30pm both days, with council archives on show

The Ow’d Towser former jail in Holmfirth will be open between 11am and 5pm next Saturday and Sunday.

Wooldale Friends Meeting House opens next Sunday from 11.30am to 4pm.

Clifton Methodist Church in Brighouse will be open next Saturday between 10am and 4pm.

Brighouse historical town walk begins opposite the town hall at 11am next Saturday. A second walk starts at the war memorial at 2pm.

Blackley Baptist Church in Elland opens its doors between 10am and 4pm next Saturday and from 1pm to 4pm next Sunday. St Mary’s Church in the town opens next Sunday between 2pm and 4pm.

St Michael’s and All Angels’ Parish Church in Dewsbury hosts a concert at 7.30pm next Friday. The church will also be open next Saturday between 10am and 4pm and next Sunday between 11am and 4pm.

All Saints’ Parish Church in Batley will be open next Saturday between 10am and 4pm while St Paul’s Church in the town will be open between 10.30am and 5pm next Saturday and 11.15am to 5pm next Sunday.

St Saviours Church in Batley will be open next Saturday from 10am to 5pm with a talk at 7.30pm. The church will also be open next Sunday from 2pm to 5pm.

In Cleckheaton the United Reformed Church will be open next Saturday from 10am to midday and from 10.30am to 6pm next Sunday.

Longley Old Hall opens its doors from 2pm to 4pm next Saturday and Sunday. Visitors must pre-book by calling 01484 430 852.
