A FAMILY will have plenty to celebrate in their new-look home - and extra Christmas presents.
Mum Shelley Summers and her two children received the gifts from Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing (KNH) - as their council home was the 1,000th to be brought up to the Kirklees decent homes standards.
Ms Summers and her children - Kelsey, 11, and Mackenzie, seven - are delighted with their new kitchen, central heating, loft insulation, new drainage and gutters, new handrail and repairs to the footpath. To help them to celebrate, they were presented with tickets for a night out at their local cinema and a voucher for a meal afterwards from KNH.
The family is among 328 tenants on the Fieldhead estate at Birstall to have their homes improved to meet the standards. Improvements carried out to other homes on the estate include new kitchens, bathrooms, central heating, doubleglazed windows and loft insulation. Work will also be carried out to make sure that the properties are in a good state of repair, particularly external doors, walls and roofs.
KNH is working in partnership with five contractors to make sure all 26,500 council homes in Kirklees reach the standards by 2006.
Work will start in more areas in the new year including: Almondbury, Waterloo, Brockholes, Shelley, Shepley, Hepworth, Ravens- thorpe and Thornhill.
