The first snow of the winter may be on its way but the weather created a spectacle in Huddersfield this morning.

Examiner photographer Andy Catchpool captured a stunning double rainbow above the Colne Valley.

And there were also shafts of sunlight breaking through thick cloud over the Holme Valley.

The double rainbow framed Pole Moor and Scapegoat Hill as blue skies and sunshine replaced heavy squally showers which had hit commuters on their way to work.

By lunchtime the rain had moved away but it is set to return with a vengeance later in the day.

Huddersfield weatherman Paul Stevens has warned of heavy rain tonight and into the early hours of Saturday.

He said: “The low pressure is moving further south so we could well see perhaps as much as eight cm of now up on the tops of the hills and moors and also get gales gusting up to 60mph.

“The town centre is likely to see more sleet and rain rather than snow but it could settle anywhere above 500 feet, so places around Holmfirth, Salendine Nook and the Colne Valley could well get a covering.

“Other parts of Yorkshire are likely to see far worse conditions, especially towards the coast and the North Yorkshire Moors”.
