Who is Huddersfield’s oldest chorister?

The Huddersfield Choral Society had thought that one of their members, bass Dennis Holmes was probably the oldest.

In December the Examiner reported that he was still singing at the age of 90.

Huddersfield Choral Society members had combed through their archives and found that 90-year-old Dennis, who was born in November 1924, and had been singing since the age of nine when he joined the Salvation Army, was a couple of years ahead of their other veteran members.

But Dennis, who joined the Society in 1986, retired at the end of the year and now it appears that the crown for the oldest singer in town has been passed on.

The latest recipient is thought to be 92-year-old baritone Douglas Radley, a member of the 100-strong Huddersfield U3A mixed choir.

Douglas, who joined the choir ten years ago ago will be 93 next month.

Every Monday morning he travels by bus from his home in Wakefield Road, Huddersfield to the Gledholt Methodist Church where the choir rehearses and takes part in the choir’s concerts.

Douglas, a former mill manager, who can also play the organ and the cornet, only took up singing when he joined the choir and says he has no intention of retiring.

Is he the oldest chorister in the area? If you know of anyone older who is still singing let the Examiner know.
