TWO councillors are stepping up the action in a bid to get one of Huddersfield's worst roads sorted out.

They will present a petition to fellow Kirklees councillors next month.

Thornhill Road at Edgerton has been the subject of numerous complaints recently, from both councillors and the public.

It was listed by the Examiner last week as one of the worst roads in the area.

Now councillors Tony Brice and Mohan Sokhal say enough is enough.

They are presenting a petition to the next full council meeting on April 5 in a bid to get Kirklees highways officials to take notice.

They say highways officials have allowed the road to fall into disrepair. They add that the popular through route needs better care.

Clr Brice, a Lindley ward representative, said: "This stretch of road is a joke. The surface is completely shot and needs to be sorted out urgently.

"It is not enough for the highways department to patch up the potholes. The road needs a total reconstruction to cope with the huge volume of daily traffic."

Clr Sokhal, representative of Greenhead ward, is working with Clr Brice to get the petition signed by as many local residents as possible.

He said: "The road is in a terrible state. A lot of traffic uses it to get to local amenities.

"Drivers should not have to contend with all these potholes.

"Many local people say the road shouldn't have been left as it is and we hope to illustrate these grievances."
