POLICE are out in force in a bid to curb yobs in Birstall.

Officers on high-visibility patrols are being joined by police community support officers, community constables and Kirklees officials.

They are concentrating on unruly behaviour on the Fieldhead Estate.

Sgt Graham Hawcroft, of the police's community safety department in Dewsbury, said the scheme had been set up after residents' complaints.

He added: "The area has been suffering from vandalism, threatening behaviour from local youths, abandoned cars, graffiti and generally unacceptable anti-social behaviour.

"We want to send out a strong message that we won't tolerate peoples' lives being made a misery by rowdy behaviour."

Truancy patrols will also be carried out by Kirklees Council, along with other schemes.

Kirklees spokesman Bill Swap said the scheme comprised several organi- sations.

It also involved developing sustainable activities for young people, cutting litter and graffiti and improving housing management and security, he added.

Truancy would be tackled as well, along with alcohol and substance abuse and hate crimes.

Mr Swap said: "The work will link into the regeneration of the area, so everyone can enjoy a good quality of life."

Sgt Hawcroft said the scheme would last about three months.

He added: "I urge people to speak to officers when they see them.

"This is a response to what the community on the estate have asked for, so please talk to us.

"We are here to tackle any problems head-on. The more information we get, the more effective we can be."
