HUDDERSFIELD MP Barry Sheerman has challenged the Government over the proposed closure of five post offices in Huddersfield.
He has asked Trade and Industry Secretary Patricia Hewitt to look into the proposed closure of the Rawthorpe, Berry Brow, Hillhouse, Primrose Hill and Greenside at Waterloo shops, which are all due to close in mid-February.
Mr Sheerman said: "I have campaigned against the proposed closures and I am dismayed that, despite public pressure, they are still going ahead.
"In particular, the closure of the Rawthorpe office would have serious consequences for the local community."
The closures have been approved by Postwatch, the consumer watchdog for postal services.
Claire Wigglesworth of Postwatch's northern branch, said: "We look at a variety of things, such as transport links.
"We decided that in these cases the alternative branches were able to provide adequate coverage for the area."
But Mr Sheerman said he would continue to fight the proposals.
He added: "I will continue to press for the interests of the local communities in Huddersfield to be taken into account."
