A DRIVER crashed his car through a wall and into a stream 8ft below before taking himself to hospital – in Manchester.

Police launched a major search after finding a silver Volkswagen Golf abandoned in a culvert below Dale Street, Milnsbridge, at around 5.40am on Christmas Eve.

Blood was found in the interior of the car after it was recovered.

The 22-year-old driver, who is thought to be from Greater Manchester, was later found 30 miles away having checked himself into accident and emergency at Manchester Royal Infirmary.

It is believed he suffered cuts and bruises but no serious injuries.

Police said the cause of the crash – and how the driver had got himself to hospital – was under investigation

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “When police arrived there was no-one present with the vehicle so officers started searching the area.

“Since then the driver has been located at a hospital in Manchester with cuts and bruises.”
