A man flouted his driving ban to fetch medication for his sick daughter.

Damien Fairburn, of Fartown Green Road in Fartown, pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and using a vehicle without insurance.

His blue Mazda was stopped by police as he drove along Bradford Road in Huddersfield on July 3.

Checks on the Police National Computer revealed that the 28-year-old was a banned driver.

Kirklees magistrates heard that he was disqualified from driving last October for 19 months for an offence of drink-driving.

In mitigation Cheryl Ford said that on the day of the offence Fairburn’s young daughter, who suffers from epilepsy, had been unwell.

She told magistrates: “He’d ran out of medication for her and it was a Sunday and no pharmacies were open.

“He had no money to get a taxi and decided to borrow a friend’s car to drive to hospital where a pharmacy would be open.

Magistrates banned Fairburn from driving for a further six months.

He must also comply with an electronically-monitored for three months.
