A man “panicked” when police officers began to follow him in their car a court heard.

Daniel Trew, 20, of Edale Avenue, Newsome, was driving a Vauxhall Astra at 6pm on October 4 in Close Hill Lane, Huddersfield, when officers noticed he was revving the engine very high and attempting to execute an 180 degree turn.

Prosecutor, Andy Wills, said: “Officers began to follow him with their lights and siren on.”

The defendant failed to stop, however, and drove at speeds of up to 60mph in a 30mph residential area with the likelihood that children would be out playing.

Mr Wills said: “He didn’t stop at junctions or crossroads and continued to travel in the same vein.

“The officers felt the driver had no consideration for other road users.”

Eventually the defendant had to brake very heavily causing the rear of the vehicle to lift off the ground.

Mr Wills added: “He tried to run away and to disguise himself but to no avail.”

In interview with police, Trew made a full and frank admission and on Wednesday at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court pleaded guilty to four driving offences.

These were: driving dangerously, driving without a licence, having only a provisional one, using a vehicle without insurance and failing to stop when asked to.

In mitigation, Sonia Kidd, said: “He panicked.”

She said that having panicked he didn’t know what to do and felt he had no option but to carry on driving.

The bench decided the allegations were so serious they could only be heard at a higher court.

Accordingly Trew was granted unconditional bail and told to appear at Leeds Crown Court on November 12.

An interim driving disqualification ban was also imposed.
