A WOMAN escaped from an abduction outside the National Coal Mining Museum near Grange Moor.

She managed to drive off after a 20-minute ordeal which began near Chickenley.

The terror began when a man opened her car's passenger door at 1.50am yesterday as she slowed down at the junction with the B6128 Leeds Road on the A638 Ossett bypass.

The man claimed to have a knife and forced her to drive for 20 minutes.

The man's mobile phone rang as they approached the mining museum and he told the woman to stop.

As he got out of the car to answer the phone the woman drove off and then alerted police.

The man was aged about 40, had long, dark, greasy hair, flicked out from under a woollen hat.

He was dressed in dark, waterproof clothing and smelled of alcohol and dirt.

The woman was left badly shaken.

Police are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information should phone Wakefield CID on 01924 293285.
