A POPULAR musician airlifted to hospital after a head-on smash has thanked his rescuers from his trauma unit bed.

Chris Parr, a drummer with Huddersfield band State of Confusion, escaped serious injury.

The smash happened in Manchester Road, Marsden , close to the Motorman’s Cafe, at 5.40pm on Friday.

Mr Parr, of Marsden , was believed to be driving a Honda which was in collision with a Citroen.

Both drivers had to be cut free by firefighters.

Mr Parr was airlifted to the Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) while the other driver, who has not been named, was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary by road.

Mr Parr thanked well-wishers from his bed in the trauma unit at the LGI.

A post on the band’s Facebook page said Mr Parr had suffered fractured ribs, a fractured breast bone and a fractured knee.

The statement added: “He is in good spirits and is already complaining about the food.

“Chris would like to thank you all for your kind comments and would especially like to thank all the emergency services for an awesome job of attendance and care!”

Passing motorists came to the aid of the two injured drivers.

One of them, roofer David Hirst, 40, of Oldham, helped comfort Mr Parr while emergency crews arrived.

“I was just two seconds behind in my van,” said Mr Hirst. “I am relieved he is OK.”

Police appealed for witnesses to ring 101.
