A five car collision left one man trapped behind the wheel last night.

The driver of a Berlingo van was stuck for 40 minutes after a head-on smash between two cars on Kirkburton's main street, North Road, following the accident, which occurred at around 10.30pm on Friday.

A White Watch fire crew from Huddersfield and one from Skelmanthorpe battled to free the man, believed to be in his 40s, who got stuck after a Vauxhall Astra crashed into the front of his van.

It is believed that a male who was driving the car down the road lost control and was unable to stop.

The force of the impact then caused the vehicles to smash into a further three parked cars before they came to a stop.

The van driver was removed via a body board after he complained of pain in his back and pelvis and was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

His passenger, a female, managed to exit the vehicle herself but was also taken to hospital, along with the driver of the Astra, to be given a check up.

Both the Astra and Berlingo were written off in the incident, while the three stationary cars received noticeable but repairable damage.

The crews closed the road to traffic until both vehicles had been towed away.
