A motorist had a narrow escape after a large tree crashed down onto Halifax Road, Edgerton, at rush hour.

At around 5.20pm today motorists watched in horror as the tree collapsed across both carriageways near Kaffir Road, completely blocking the busy road.

One driver had to do an emergency stop to avoid the falling tree. And a woman and baby were reported standing at the side of the road in shock.

Emergency services were soon on the scene, which was one of traffic chaos as motorists reversed to divert along side roads.

Graeme Howard, of Salendine Nook, was in his car with daughter Aimee, 13, heading towards Ainley Top and took the pictures above.

He said: “It was a massive tree. One driver had to really slam his brakes on, it only just narrowly missed the cars. The lady with the baby was shaking like a leaf.”

Tree surgeons arrived quickly with a chainsaw to remove the tree and the road was open again at 6pm. No injuries were reported.
