Drivers were left frustrated as a second set of roadworks meant roads were closed in part of Huddersfield.

Existing gas main repairs have already seen King's Bridge Road in Newsome closed for three weeks.

But now Kirklees Council crews have turned up and shut Queen Street South to carry out work on traffic islands.

It left both roads closed and drivers having to find diversions.

Work on the traffic islands at the junction of Queen Street South and Colne Road has been months in the planning.

But as one driver said: “Why choose to do it when the Kingsbridge Road is already shut to traffic?”

Northern Gas Networks said the essential work to replace ageing metal gas mains in Kingsbridge Road was progressing well and is on schedule to finish by August 21.

A specialist team of engineers from Northern Gas Networks (NGN) has been working on replacing the old 18in cast iron pipe with modern plastic pipes since July 13.

Paul Jagger, construction services area manager at Northern Gas Networks, said: “We’re replacing the gas main in Kingsbridge Road to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

Queen Street South, Huddersfield closed for traffic islands to be installed by Kirklees Council.

“We have planned the work in conjunction with Kirklees Council to minimise disruption to members of the public.

“In order to ensure the work can be carried out safely and efficiently, the King's Bridge Road is closed throughout the duration of the project.

“A signed diversion in place via Wakefield Road, Somerset Road, Maple Street and Kings Mill Lane.”

A council spokesman said: “The work is taking place to build traffic islands and is scheduled to be completed by August 16, but with the current rate of progress we are hopeful the work will be done sooner.

“Planning the works at the same time as the Northern Gas Networks work, and when traffic is lighter over the summer, helps to minimise the delay and disruption to those using the route.

“To help drivers we provided advance notice signs a week before the start of work to give them the opportunity to take alternative routes and minimise delays to their journeys.

“The Northern Gas Networks work will continue after the council’s work has been completed.”
