A DRIVER scrambled to safety after his car was left dangling over a 15ft drop after a crash.

The Nissan Micra spun out of control on a bend on Penistone Road, near its junction with Gate Foot Lane, New Mill, at 10.30pm yesterday.

Sub-officer Richard Meakin, of Skelmanthorpe fire station, said: "The driver was lucky, with his car in a precarious position.

"It had flipped around and the back end was hanging over the edge. Tools were in the boot and the weight was making the car very unsafe.

"The driver managed to kick the windscreen out to escape before we got there," he added.

The man was unhurt and the car was recovered before it could plunge into a field.

In a similar smash on February 9, a VW Bora careered through a concrete fence at the same spot and plunged into the field.

In that incident, firefighters cut the doors and roof off the car, so the 32-year-old driver, from Wakefield, could be lifted out. He had suffered back and chest injuries.
