A DRIVER was lucky to escape a motorway crash which wrecked his car.

But he was then arrested by police on suspicion of drink driving.

The Huddersfield man's red Vauxhall Astra careered off the eastbound carriageway of the M62 near to Stott Hall Farm between junctions 22 and 23 at 10.25 last night .

The car rolled over several times and was so badly damaged emergency crews could hardly make out its make and model.

The man managed to scramble free with a cut elbow.

A police spokeswoman said: "The man was arrested on suspicion of being over the prescribed limit and later charged.

"He was released to appear before Calderdale Magistrates in Halifax at a later date."

Watch Manager Rodger Binns, of Elland fire station, said: "The car had come off the road into a central grassed area and rolled over several times.

"It was so badly damaged we could hardly make out it was a Vauxhall and the engine had been flung out as it rolled over."

One lane on the eastbound carriageway was closed after the crash causing traffic delays.
