Drivers reported burst tyres after hitting a huge pothole that appeared in the M1 overnight.

Motorists heading South between junction 40 at Ossett and junction 39 at Wakefield failed to see the hole in the inside lane in the dark early today.

Several cars were said to have damaged tyres and reports flooded in to the police and Highways England.

Truck driver Rob Risk tweeted: “Massive pothole M1 south at junction 39 numerous cars with burst tyres needs sorting and lane closing asap.”

Later Rob told the Examiner: “I drove past it in my truck. It was about 2ft-3ft long and about the width of a car tyre. I saw at least seven cars on the hard shoulder with burst front offside tyres.”

Highways England sent out emergency crews to repair the hole. The two inside lanes of the motorway were closed during the morning rush hour, causing some delays and tailbacks.

Repairs were completed around 10.30am and all lanes were re-opened.

Highways England tweeted: “Essential repairs completed and all lanes now open to traffic #M1 southbound J40-J39 at #Wakefield. Thanks for your patience this morning.”
