A NEW drop-in centre may be built in the grounds of Dewsbury District Hospital.

GP-led North Kirklees Primary Care NHS Trust is behind the centre, which would help medical cases outside office hours.

A statement from the trust said: "The PCT has put together plans for a separate primary care centre close to A&E at Dewsbury District Hospital as it recognises the pressures on the local accident & emergency department.

"These plans are still under discussion and we are trying to firm-up details about premises, staffing arr- angements and identifying when this could be included in our investment plans."

The PCT has been working closely with other health bodies, including Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust, which runs the hospital.

It says: "The intention would be to provide a wide range of primary care services as well as an alternative to A&E for people who have minor ailments or injuries.

"It would not be run during the night as evidence from surveys is that the bulk of demand falls between breakfast time and 11pm."
