SPECIAL drop-in sessions have been organised to help people fill out their Census forms.

The first are in Newsome and it is hoped that other communities in Kirklees will follow suit.

All households must fill out the survey by Sunday, March 27.

The Census surveys population size, ethnic makeup, age, jobs, marital status and other basic information.

The drop-in sessions will be held at the Nosh Cafe and run twice a week over the next three weeks.

Chris Marsden, who is responsible for the survey in Newsome and Almondbury, said: “We have been encouraged to help people fill in their Census forms and the hope is that other areas will hold events to help the members of their community.

“The idea is that we will be using the cafe as a drop-in centre for an hour at a time and Census officers will be there so that people can come in and get help or ask questions.

“It’s unusual that we’re using a cafe as most people will run events like this in places like community centres.

“But I thought it would be great if we could have a drop-in centre in a busy part of Newsome.

“Everyone needs to be counted. It’s important that we get a high count to give an accurate picture of the area.

“Hopefully events like this will encourage as many people as possible to fill out their forms accurately and on time.

“They have the choice of either phoning the national helpline or coming to completion events.

There are 230 staff carrying out the survey in Kirklees.

It is printed in 59 languages and is described as easy to complete and confidential.

Mr Marsden doesn’t believe that there’s been a lot of confusion over filling out the Census.

But he does believe the drop-in sessions will help certain groups, like people with disabilities or poor language skills, that may need more help than others.

Qualified Census officers will be on hand to help anyone who doesn’t understand how to fill in their family’s circumstances.

They can also arrange for further specialist help if needed.

The drop-in sessions at Newsome Nosh have now started and the next one is Saturday at 1.30pm to 2.30pm and Wednesday and Saturday for the next two weeks at the same place and time.
