A shoplifter turned to theft to fund his drug addiction.

Grant Ainley, of Wakefield Road in Fenay Bridge, pleaded guilty to two charges of shop theft.

The first offence occurred at Lepton Service Station on May 30.

He was caught on CCTV stealing £30 worth of bacon from the store.

Then on September 9 he took two cans of spray tan from Tesco in Huddersfield town centre.

When he was stopped he took the cans from his pockets and threw them to the floor.

Sonia Kidd, mitigating, said that the 33-year-old suffered from a difficulty with class A drugs for a substantial period.

He was on a prescription for methadone but when he stopped taking this he turned to crime again.

Ainley was sentenced to 16 weeks in custody suspended for a year.

He must comply with six months of drug treatment.

Finally, he has to pay £85 costs, £115 compensation and £30 compensation to the service station.
