A drug addict begged magistrates to send her to prison so that she could get her life sorted out.

Julie Harrison, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to the theft of a £50 pair of sunglasses.

The incident occurred at Specsavers in Huddersfield town centre on May 19.

The 38-year-old was witnessed by staff taking the sunglasses from the New Street store.

Police were called and she discarded the sunglasses, although these were recovered.

Harrison tested positive for the use of Class A opiates following her arrest.

Bob Carr, mitigating, said that Harrison had asked to go to prison.

He told magistrates: “She has no where to live and wants to get her head in order.

“It’s a very sad state of affairs but she wants to sort herself out while she’s in prison.”

Magistrates jailed Harrison for eight weeks.

She will have to pay £115 upon her release from prison.
