A MAN stole from a supermarket to fund his £40 a day drug habit.

Scott Bolland, 30, admitted two charges of theft when he appeared before Kirklees magistrates yesterday.

The Huddersfield bench was told that he was caught stealing meat and groceries from Asda in Dewsbury on two occasions.

Vanessa Schofield, prosecuting, said that on April 3 staff noticed that products had gone missing and viewed store CCTV footage.

On the film Bolland was seen selecting the items from the shelves and leaving the store without paying.

Just 24 hours later he returned to the same store to steal again.

He was detained outside the store and police were called.

On both occasions the goods taken by Bolland, of Lady Ann Road, Batley, totalled £60.

Magistrates were told that he had not been before the court since April 2010.

Paul Blanchard, defending, said that his client admitted responsibility for both thefts.

He said that Bolland needed money to fund his £30 to £40 a day heroin habit.

The solicitor added: “That’s the crux of the issue, he has dabbled with drugs over the years and had a problem with heroin.

“He has reverted to theft to fund this habit.

“He has this demon within him, it’s not something he’s proud of.”

Magistrates gave him a community order for six months with a drug rehabilitation requirement.

They also ordered him to pay £60 compensation for the meat which was not recovered.
