A woman caught stealing from a budget clothing store urged a district judge to send her to prison.

Kate Longshaw, 30, admitted stealing DVDs worth £24 from Primark in Huddersfield town centre.

The theft at the New Street Store on September 8 was spotted by a member of security staff.

He saw Longshaw hovering around an aisle before taking the goods and then making her way to the British Heart Foundation charity shop nearby.

She was followed there by the security officer and returned to the store to await the arrival of police.

Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard that Longshaw, of New Street in Netherton, was subject to a drug rehabilitation requirement for offences of failing to comply with a community order and theft.

Ian Whiteley, mitigating, said that his client had a long-standing issue with drugs.

He added that this was spiralling out of control and Longshaw felt that only a spell in prison could help her kick her habit.

Jailing her for eight weeks, District Judge Michael Fanning told her: “Hopefully that break from the drugs will enable you to access help in the community.”

Longshaw still has to pay £150 court charge and £80 victim surcharge.
