A hotel worker discovered the body of a man on the blood-stained carpet of a room she was about to clean.

She had seen Mark Tingle, 33, the previous day on the floor of his room at Edgerton Guest House, New North Road. He had apologised and staggered on to the bed.

Beer bottles were scattered and it was discovered after his death that he had taken a heroin overdose.

A Huddersfield inquest heard that Mr Tingle had a long history of prescription drug and alcohol dependence. He had a mild personality disorder and had been in St Luke’s Hospital. He had also self-harmed.

Lifeline and On Track drugs charities made many efforts to help Mr Tingle, who had sporadically attended help sessions.

Coroner Oliver Longstaff said: “It is very sad when comparatively young men get their lives into such a state that alcohol and drugs become controlling factors in their lives.

“Clearly he was a gentleman with serious problems and every so often he would try to do something about them. The agencies were trying to do something to help him.”

He recorded the cause of death as non-dependent use of drugs.
