A drunk woman got in the way as paramedics tried to treat a heavily intoxicated member of her group, a court heard.

Mary McDonagh, of Ballroyd Road in Fartown, was before Kirklees Magistrates’ Court today.

The 54-year-old pleaded guilty to a charge of being drunk and disorderly in public.

Police were called to an address on Fernside Crescent in Almondbury on April 5 at 5.30pm, magistrates heard.

There were reports of a disturbance there and they found paramedics trying to provide treatment to a very drunk male.

McDonagh was staggering around and trying to intervene.

She was abusive towards the officers and fell over at one point.

McDonagh was arrested and taken to the cells of Huddersfield Police Station where she continued to shout abuse and struggle.

Magistrates were told that she had three previous drunk and disorderly offences on her record.

Simon Lindley, mitigating, said that McDonagh was at her boyfriend’s address with other people.

There came a point when he wanted them to leave and she ‘foolishly’ intervened.

Mr Lindley added: “She didn’t believe she was drunk but her behaviour suggests otherwise.

“Her intention to assist has gone horribly wrong and she’s just made it worse.”

Magistrates told McDonagh that her case was aggravated because she was interfering with medical professionals due to her intoxicated state.

They have her a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered her to pay £15 victim surcharge.
