A drunk woman attacked a police officer when she took a can of beer off her, Kirklees magistrates heard.

The officer was trying to help Sarah Turner, 39, after she contacted them in distress when she ended up in Meltham, an unfamiliar village.

However Turner hit the officer in the face as she was given a lift in a police car.

Turner, of Keighley, admitted assaulting a constable on October 15 when police were called to a takeaway in Meltham at just after 11pm.

Alex Bozman, prosecuting, told how Turner became abusive in the car and refused to calm down. She took her seatbelt off and the officer realised she had a beer can between her legs.

When she reached out to take the can Turner hit out, knocking the officer’s glasses off.

Turner’s solicitor Keith Blackwell said that she had drunk a lot of alcohol and was distressed.

Sentencing was adjourned until December 4.
