A drunk man found wandering in the middle of the road told police his name was Hannibal Lecter.

Stephen McLaughlin, of Victory Avenue, Paddock, claimed he was the fictional serial killer and cannibal when the officers quizzed him about his identity.

They had been trying to help the 27-year-old after discovering him stumbling in the road in the Milnsbridge area late on December 20.

McLaughlin pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly in public when he appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that police spotted him at just after midnight as they travelled along Manchester Road.

Alex Bozman, prosecuting, said: “They noticed a couple of males walking in the middle of the road and one was bare-chested. The men were both at risk of being struck by passing vehicles.”

One of the men moved straight away but McLaughlin swore at them and continued to walk in the road.

Mr Bozman said: “The officers carried on following him for his protection.

“Mr McLaughlin was shouted at to stand still but he was struggling to keep himself upright.

“Efforts were made to try and get sensible responses on where he was going to and where he was.

“He responded by further swearing and aggression and initially gave his details as Hannibal Lecter.”

McLaughlin’s solicitor explained that he had been out with his brother in the run-up to Christmas and both were in drink.

Magistrates fined him a total of £90 and ordered him to pay £20 victim surcharge.
