A drunk man out celebrating Eid spat at police and hurled abuse at them after they quizzed them over a sexual assault.

Adeel Nafees admitted to charges of racially-aggravated assault and threatening behaviour, possession of cannabis and being drunk and disorderly in public.

Kirklees magistrates heard that police were called to Lavender Croft in Batley in the early hours of June 7 to a report of stones being thrown at a window.

Nafees, 28, was in the vicinity and became abusive towards the officers.

When he refused to calm down he was arrested and placed in the back of the police vehicle.

He spat out at one officer, making contact with his face.

Alex Bozman, prosecuting, said: “He continued to be abusive towards the officers, calling them white and black b******s and making threats against their daughters.

“While in the custody area at Huddersfield Police Station he spat in the face of another officer and continued to be abusive throughout, making racial remarks against the detention officers and threats against their children.”

Andy Day, mitigating, said that his client had been out celebrating Eid and was drunk.

He told magistrates that Nafees, of Charnwood Bank in Batley, was stopped by the officers and they asked him if he had sexually assaulted any women recently.

Mr Day said: “He felt seriously insulted by what they said and reacted with verbal insults.”

Magistrates sentencing until August 17 for a full report.
