A MAN stole a woman’s phone from a Huddersfield nightspot.

Daniel Sheard was so drunk that he couldn’t remember the theft from the Verve Bar on Byram Street. But days following his arrest he found the BlackBerry Curve mobile in his flat – and handed it in to police.

Sheard, from Bishops Court in Berry Brow, pleaded guilty to the offence at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Linda Fowler, prosecuting, said victim Rebecca Eva wanted to make a phone call but was having problems with her own mobile.

She borrowed her friend’s phone, leaving her mobile on a table in the bar. When Ms Eva returned it was missing.

Ms Fowler said: “They viewed the CCTV which showed a male picking it up from the table.” The theft was reported to police who identified 31-year-old Sheard.

Sheard was bailed but returned to the police station three days later and told officers that he had found the phone in his flat.

Magistrates gave him a conditional discharge for 12 months, and ordered him to pay £85 costs and £15 victim surcharge.
