A CLUB that almost died is celebrating again.

Members at Cowcliffe Liberal Club won the Campaign for Real Ale Best Mild Club award, for the quality of its beer.

And it meant a second Camra award in 12 months for a club that almost folded.

The club was formed in 1924 but faced closure two years ago because of dwindling numbers.

Now they have several hundred members on the books and in the past two months have signed up 70 new members.

Club steward Gerry Kilroy said: "It's a real success story.

"The club has really come to life and it is great for the whole community."

Mr Ben Lumb, of Taylors Brewery, is pictured presenting the award on behalf of Camra to club members (from left) Paul Fox, Dave Durbak, Mr Kilroy and Philip Riding.
