Pupils from Thornhill Community Academy soaked up the limelight last night as they kicked off the National Television Awards.

The school choir, made famous by documentary Educating Yorkshire, opened the show as they backed X Factor winner Sam Bailey and pop star Michael Bolton with a version of Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.

The school's headteacher Jonny Mitchell was back up on the stage shortly afterwards along with colleagues Michael Steer and Matthew Burton to collect the award for best documentary, as voted for by the public.

Mr Mitchell told the crowds at London's O2 and the millions watching at home: "It's amazing that at a time when teachers are getting bashed left, right and centre, we can give a little back to those hard-working professionals."

Former Thornhill student Musharaf Asghar, whose battle to overcome a stammer became one of the highlights of the series, also joined his former teachers on the stage and proclaimed "yes, yes, yes" in celebration.
