A factory fire, which has been blazing for over a week, has been ‘significantly reduced’ said firefighters.

But residents living near the woodyard at Crow Edge are still concerned over palls of acrid smoke.

The blaze, which broke out at R Plevin and Sons, Crow Edge, on June 2, is still being tackled by fire crews from West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire.

South Yorkshire Fire Service said the fire had been reduced to one stack of wood chips.

The spokesperson said: “We have significantly reduced the fire in the last 24 to 36 hours.

“We still have three high-volume pumps up there and we’re still working with Nottinghamshire and West Yorkshire fire and rescue services.”

Firefighters are still advising neighbours to keep their windows and doors closed.

The spokesperson said: “We’re still advising neighbours to keep their windows and doors shut as a precaution and to stop the odour from getting inside.”

But neighbours have become frustrated with smoke drifting into their gardens and concerned about the environmental impact.

One resident said: “Thousands of litres of water are being pumped to it every minute. This is the second fire there in the space of a few weeks.

“What happens if we have a drought? It is surrounded by quite a lot of trees. Surely this must have affected a lot of wildlife, not to mention the dirty water being pumped into the nearby river affecting the livestock that drink from there?

“Yet again we are having to keep our doors and windows closed because of the smoke affecting our eyes and sinuses and people with asthma.

“It isn’t just local people being affected; the smoke is travelling many miles to surrounding areas too. How many more times is this going to happen before something is done?”
