A couple in their 80s were given oxygen by firefighters after a bedroom blaze at their home.

Firefighters from Brighouse, Cleckheaton and Odsal were called to the house in Park Terrace, Hipperholme, at 2.30pm on Sunday.

It is believed a dropped cigarette on a rug in the bedroom had started smouldering filling the house with smoke.

A neighbour went in to try to tackle the fire before emergency crews arrived.

The couple were treated for the effects of breathing in smoke but did not need hospital treatment.

Watch commander Alex MacFarlane, of Brighouse Fire Station, said had smoke detectors been fitted the couple would have escaped without injury.

Firefighters cleared the smoke and fitted detectors before leaving. Minimal fire damage was caused.
