AN elderly man had to be cut free from his car after a smash in Mirfield.

The man was trapped by his legs after his Rover was in collision with a wall and a lorry on Huddersfield Road, Mirfield, outside the John Cotton mill at 1.30pm yesterday.

Firefighters attended from Brighouse, Dewsbury and Cleckheaton along with paramedics and police.

Once the man had been checked over by paramedics, firefighters cut the door off and pulled the caved-in front of the car away from his legs.

The man was suffering from severe shock, but is not thought to be seriously hurt. His wife, who was a passenger, was also left shocked.

Huddersfield Road was closed until 2.45pm.
