An elderly man suffered burns to his head and hair after tackling a blaze at his luxury home.

The man and his wife were taken to hospital after a fire at Vine Grove, Clifton this afternoon.

The flames took hold in a built in garage underneath the large home overlooking Brighouse.

The man’s wife is thought to have been struggling with her breathing.

The couple walked from the home themselves with the help of neighbours.

They were treated by paramedics and taken by ambulance to Calderdale Royal Hospital.

At its height, fire crews from Huddersfield, Cleckheaton and Mirfield were all tackling the blaze.

Watch Commander Colin Brown from Cleckheaton fire station, said: “The couple were alerted to the fire by smoke detectors and came down to find their garage well alight.

“The man has tried to fight the fire himself and he received slight burns to his head and his hair.

“So at that point he called us. Six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus went in and we needed three hoses to prevent it from spreading to the main house.”

The incident began at about 2pm and firefighters were still on scene at about 8pm this evening, damping down and searching for hot spots in a bid to prevent the blaze from re-igniting.
