An electrician has lost his job – after getting behind the wheel while twice the legal drink-drive limit.

Mathew Davison, of Market Place in Meltham, lost control of his work vehicle and smashed into a car before hitting a wall.

He admitted that he had no idea why he took the decision to drive home from the pub on September 5.

James Weekes, prosecuting, told Kirklees magistrates that the smash happened on Blackmoorfoot Road in Crosland Moor at just before 1am.

Davison, 36, was seen to swerve across the road in his Ford Ranger pick-up truck.

He hit another car before colliding with a wall on the other side of road.

Police were called and Davison was arrested after providing a positive breath sample at the roadside.

Further breath tests at the police station showed that he had 73 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

This was more than twice the legal limit of 35 microgrammes.

The other driver was unharmed, but Davison suffered several breaks to his fingers and arm following the smash.

Mr Weekes said: “He said that the vehicle belonged to work and he drove it to the pub.

“Mr Davison said that he would usually leave the vehicle and get a taxi home.

“He couldn’t understand what happened and couldn’t remember the collision with the car and the wall.”

Mr Davison blamed his drinking on his lack of memory of the incident.

His solicitor said that he was ashamed of his actions and would no longer be able to continue his work for the small family business.

Magistrates banned him from driving for 20 months. Davison was also ordered to pay 110 fine, 85 costs and 20 victim surcharge.
