A teenager arrested after police and bomb disposal experts were called to an Elland factory last month has made his first appearance before a crown court judge.

Dominic Barker, 19, was charged with firearms offences following the drama the factory unit off Halifax Road.

The major operation involved an army team being called in from Catterick, North Yorkshire and roads in the area were closed off.

Barker, who faces charges relating to the possession of a handgun and the attempted manufacture of a shotgun, appeared on bail before Judge Roger Thomas QC at Bradford Crown Court yesterday. fri

He was not asked to enter any pleas to the charges and his barrister Stephen Wood indicated that the prosecution was still considering what the appropriate charges should be.

Barker, who was wearing a black suit, white shirt and black tie, was told by the judge that he would have to come back to Bradford Crown Court for a plea and case management hearing on October 25.

The judge was told that his trial could last about five days and it was fixed to start on January 13 next year.

Barker is on bail with a condition that he lives at an address in Dumfries in Scotland and he is also banned from entering the Calderdale area unless he has a pre-arranged appointment with his solicitors.

The judge also said Barker was prohibited from handling any live or imitation firearm or ammunition.

After the police operation in Elland a spokesman said that a 19-year-old man was taken to hospital with injuries to his hand.

A search of the premises led to the discovery of two de-commissioned hand grenades and the area was temporarily evacuated as a precautionary measure.
