AN eight-storey block of flats had to be evacuated after a blaze broke out.

A fire was discovered in the rubbish chute at Castlegate House, Crown Street, Elland, at 12.45pm yesterday.

Firefighters found the blaze had also taken hold in a cupboard housing gas and electric equipment.

The fire, on the fourth floor, led to the building being evacuated.

Two residents, men aged 71 and 49, were treated on the spot for smoke inhalation but did not need to go to hospital.

The fire was confined to the cupboard, but the corridor was badly smoke- damaged.

The fire in the chute was quickly doused.

The cause of the fires is being investigated.

Three people were treated in hospital after a fire in the block on Monday.
