A nursery worker who has watched his brother battle cancer has given something back to support his plight.

Dan Binns, 22, who works at Water’s Edge Day Nursery, in Elland, raised funds for the Trust which has supported his brother Will, 19, who is having gruelling treatment for bone cancer.

Dan had wanted to organise something for a while but was unsure on a charity before the idea of Teenage Cancer Trust at St James’ Hospital in Leeds popped up.

Dan said: “Will was diagnosed with cancer over a year ago and has been in and out of the ward for treatment.

“He doesn’t let anything faze him. He is a positive person and I have visited him on the ward having chemo and the staff are fantastic.

“Anything we can do to help. I think Will wanted the money raised to go to purchase fans for the ward.”

Will, who lives in Southowram, was diagnosed with cancer by chance after doctors discovered it when he broke his ankle during a fall at work.

Dan added: “Will fell off a ladder and went for scans. It showed a tumour in his leg and because it was embedded with the nerves he underwent surgery to remove his leg below the knee.

“He still remains positive and has had physio and is waiting for a prosthetic leg to be made.

“He is also having radiotherapy for the cancer and it’s too early to say how things are looking.

“We hosted a Blue themed day at the nursery, as blue is Will’s favourite colour. We linked it in with Disney’s Frozen film and hosted a disco and play gym assault course.”

Play gym owner Joanne Wood added: “We were thrilled to raise as much money as possible for the Teenage Cancer Trust, and the little ones loved tackling our play gym assault course.”

The event raised £423 for the Teenage Cancer Trust. Will now also plans to host a charity head shave in the coming months.
